Bromley is where I am based, and the surrounding BR postcodes cover some of the best period housing in South London. A fair amount of it has bathrooms and kitchens that are due an update.

What the housing means for tiling

Shortlands and Bickley have large Victorian and Edwardian villas, and Beckenham has a lot of the same stock divided into flats. The original houses often have generous hallways with the remains of a geometric floor, and bathrooms big enough to take large format tile properly. The conversions tend to have the opposite problem: small rooms, awkward layouts and a lot of cuts.

Hayes, West Wickham and Park Langley are largely interwar semis and detached houses. Standard layouts, timber first floors, and bathrooms that usually want a full re-tile rather than a repair.

Older properties across all of these are rarely plumb or square, so a good deal of the work is deciding where to absorb the discrepancy. That is a setting-out decision, and it is made before any adhesive is mixed.
