Tiler in Croydon

Croydon sits at the western edge of the area I cover, and it has about as much variety in housing stock as anywhere in South London. That variety is what decides how a tiling job runs.

What the housing means for tiling

The Victorian and Edwardian terraces around Thornton Heath, South Norwood and Addiscombe have the classic narrow hallway and the original porch, which is where geometric floors belong. They also tend to have bathrooms added into the back addition, often small, often not square, and setting out matters more in a small room than a large one because every cut is visible.

The interwar semis out towards Shirley, Sanderstead and Selsdon usually have more generous bathrooms and suspended timber floors. A timber floor needs proper preparation before it takes tile, because deflection is what cracks tiles and grout later.

Nearer the town centre there are a lot of flats and conversions. Those bring their own constraints: sound insulation requirements, restrictions on working hours, and access that has to be planned rather than assumed.
