Mosaic Tiling in Bromley & South London

Mosaic works best where a full-size tile cannot go, or where you want a change of texture rather than a change of colour. Shower niches, curved surfaces, borders, splashbacks and feature panels are where it earns its place.

Sheets, joints and the grid

Most mosaic arrives on mesh-backed sheets, typically 300mm square. The joint between one sheet and the next has to match the joints within the sheet exactly, or the eye picks up a grid across the wall immediately. On a large area that means checking the spacing continuously rather than trusting the sheets to self-align.

Cutting is slower than full-size tile because the cuts often fall through individual tesserae rather than between them, and mesh backing has to be trimmed without loosening the tiles around it.

Grout matters more than usual

Mosaic has far more grout per square metre than any other tiling, so grout colour does a lot of the work. A contrasting grout emphasises the grid and makes the whole panel read as texture. A matching grout lets the colour of the mosaic itself come through. In a shower, the sheer volume of joint is also why the substrate needs proper tanking underneath.

Niches and small details

A shower niche is one of the few places where mosaic is genuinely the practical answer as well as the attractive one, because the returns and reveals are small enough that any full-size tile would be mostly cuts. Getting the niche square, tanked and set out so the mosaic courses line through with the surrounding wall tiles is what makes it look built in rather than added on.
