Ceramic is the traditional wall tile, and it is still the right answer for a lot of jobs. It is softer and lighter than porcelain, which makes it easier to cut cleanly around awkward fittings and less demanding on the wall behind it.

Walls, splashbacks and bathrooms

Most kitchen splashbacks and bathroom walls are ceramic. The glaze range is enormous, from flat white metro tiles through to crackle glazes and deep colours, and the price is usually kinder than porcelain or stone for the same coverage.

Because ceramic is more porous than porcelain, it is better kept to walls and lighter-use floors. In a hallway or a kitchen floor that takes real traffic, porcelain will wear better over time.

Metro tiles and why the layout matters

Metro tiles look simple and are one of the easiest things to get wrong. A half brick bond on a tile with any bow along its length will lip in the middle of every course. A third bond, or a stack bond if the tiles are accurate enough, usually sits far better.

The bigger decisions are made before any tile goes up: where the full tiles land, which cuts end up in the corners, how the courses line through with a window reveal or a worktop, and whether the grout is a match or a contrast. Those choices are what the finished wall is actually judged on.
